A few years ago I was on a plane flying to meet my new boss. I had just quit my office job and had dove into work-from-home life full time, and lemme tell you, I was excited. (Still am, actually!)
The blogger I had started working for asked me to read Ruth Soukup’s book How to Blog for Profit (Without Selling Your Soul) as an intro into the blogging world. So I took the book with me on the plane ride down.
I was devouring the book! Underlining, making notes, dog-earing pages.
I was pumped about everything I was learning about this awesome new world of making money through blogging.
The guy I was smooshed next to on the plane had been observing me going through the book’s pages. After a couple hours of me completely zoned into my book reading, he asked, So what are you reading?
You’re going to have some haters (pssst: they’re just jealous!)
I showed him the cover, which said it all — you can make money blogging!
And to my surprise, he laughed at me! This half laugh, half snort, half incredulous, half sorry for me kind of noise. He rolled his eyes, shook his head, and made some comment about how dumb it was to think people could make money working online.
First of all, RUDE.
Second of all, the irony!
I was sitting there reading a book from someone who makes multi-millions through her blog. I was on my way down to visit my new client who also made millions off her blog.
And that’s just to name two of the thousands of extremely successful people who have made six-, seven-, even eight-figure careers as virtual entrepreneurs.
I can’t remember what exactly I replied back to that…dude…on the plane.
But looking back on that memory, it makes me laugh.
And it makes me realize just how important it is to show how profitable and doable this crazy world of virtual entrepreneurship is.
Surround yourself with people who will encourage you
Not everyone you meet — or even some people in your family or close friends — will understand how you can quit a stable 9-to-5 and dive into starting your own business online.
They will think you’re a dreamer. You’re naive. You’re a risk-taker. You aren’t planning for your future.
They might even be like the guy on the plane and shake their heads and make weird noises at you.
Sometimes it does get discouraging. And you’ll even feel like you’re out on your own, trying to create a new, better life for yourself.
That’s why it is so important to surround yourself with others who are on the same path as you, getting their work-from-home life started. That’s why you need to see examples of others who are already succeeding!
Then you can be encouraged to keep going right alongside others who are going through the same challenges and excitements with you.
And you can be motivated by entrepreneurs who have been through the same process as you and have overcome…and are currently killing it!
There are always going to be people who are discouraging you.
Maybe because they’re jealous they don’t have the courage to try what you are doing…or maybe they’re just closed-minded and can’t see the opportunity ahead.
But there also so many more people out there who have gone before you or are right in the middle of this journey with you now.
Surround yourself with those people. And stay encouraged!
Two of the best ways to stay motivated is to
- join groups (in person and online!) filled with other entrepreneurs like yourself
- follow other bloggers/virtual entrepreneurs on social media who have become successful
I’m always excited to talk with and encourage others on this work-from-home trip, so feel free to join me over on my Facebook page where we can chat!
